Hi everyone, welcome to Obsidian!
We are a project built for Minecraft, the blocky sandbox, created by Mojang, where users construct their own little world. To generalize Minecraft is to do it a disservice; no other game brings out the creative spirit in such a way Minecraft has. We see this in fan-made videos, artwork, in-game creations, and countless other content made for it. Put simply, it is in a league of its own.
Even with all of its potential, Minecraft is not without limits. Releasing the shackels of the base game has been a monstrous task for groups such as hMod, Bukkit, Spout, or Forge and, for the most part, it has been accomplished but no one has ever delivered a truly unique server-driven experience. Limitations still exist; for example, a Bukkit server can have endless content but it remains shackled by no access to the client. Forge can deliver content to both server and client but requires installation of the "mod" for admin and player alike. As a consequence, this scares users away and limits the creative freedom admins can exert. It almost feels like every project focuses on everything but the user experience.
Until now.
Obsidian is about bridging gaps, fulfilling what has been missing. We achieve our goal by building upon Forge but with a focus on delivering a customized experience, by the admin, from the server. A user can join, receive content, and play the game; all without having to worry about needing to install missing mods. Our project provides a framework for developers to use, in addition to what Forge provides, that aims to assist in creating content quicker and easier for users to enjoy. To facilitate this we provide the Store, a place where developers can showcase their work and admins can quickly find content that fits their server and community the most. Likewise for servers, we provide the Server showcase where admins can create elaborate and attractive listings to draw in new players. Finally, we have the community: a place where everyone can come together and discuss everything regarding the project, Minecraft, or anything else.
This is simply the beginning. Obsidian is as much alive as is the dreams of anyone who has ever wanted more out of Minecraft and will continue to grow as people flock to our cause. We invite everyone to sign up, browse the site, give feedback, and be a part of our growing community. The future of Minecraft is server-driven content and Obsidian will pioneer the way.
